Times Square, as you knew it, is gone… well, at least the cars. Cruising down Broadway this past Saturday, it was a bit unnerving (in a very, very good way) to see people popping a squat in the middle of Times Square. Instead of dodging cabs I had to weave in and out of lawn chairs. Surreal. The elimination of cars in Times Square is part of the beginning phase of PlaNYC 2030 , Mayor Bloomberg’s plan for the sustainable future of New York City. As I stopped to take it in, I tried to imagine what 42nd and Broadway would look like with an actual tree in the vicinity. Unfortunately, it’s still too much of a mental stretch. But this is a start, and a big splash of a start indeed.
