So today during my morning commute into the big apple I thought about a few things I really don't enjoy about NYC. Now, these things aren't necessarily the city's fault, but it's just some annoyances you gotta deal with when being here. The first is: rain. Rainy days in New York are quite... miserable. I always feel ill-prepared for this type of weather. It's always a monsoon I feel that descends on this city. I never have a good umbrella to protect me from being soaked, I can never find a poncho on the streets to buy. It's so cold and just.. blah. I hate it. The rain totally brings down the mood of the city, everything is more rushed, more difficult, more annoying. I've been caught in 2 really bad rain storms where I've been soaked to the bone (no exaggeration) and I think it's probably 2 of the worst experiences of my life. But again, this isn't the city's fault - it's mother natures. Rain sucks, end of story. The next thing I really hate about NYC is the train commute and the people on it. I take the train in from Beacon (that's Upstate folks) and it's about an hour and 20 min til I arrive at GC. It's a boring train ride with no exceptional views and usually very quiet travelers. What sucks about the train is 1. it always takes forever. I always feel like it takes way too long to arrive at my destination. Either the train is running or late or it just draaggssss. And another thing, it costs a lot! A round-trip ticket from Beacon to GC is roughly $25 OFF PEAK! What the heck!? Am I just a cheap-o here or is that truly expensive. Now I know some people will respond "well compared to gas prices...." and that's fine I hear you. But consider a monthly pass to NYC from my station - roughly $320. That to me is a little insane. I commuted all last summer to my internship and I went through about a grand just on transportation alone for a NYC commute. Between gas, parking fees, train passes, and subway rides - it added up to roughly $1000 for the whole summer. You can imagine how relieved I am to be paid now to commute this time around. Another thing about commuting is the people ON the train. I always get stuck with the weirdos. Forgive me if I start sounding rude but there's just a few things that really bother me when being on the train. For example, if I can barely fit in the seat, please don't make it your business to sit down next to me. I'm a 90lb girl - if I can't fit on the sit, then how are you supposed to sir? And also, if I have my stuff on the seat and I'm sleeping, don't take it upon yourself to move my stuff off the seat and get yourself comfortable. At least give me a heads up or a warning to let me know you're gonna plop down next to me. I understand that seats are limited and it gets crowded so everyone needs to share space, but just be nice about it. And another thing - please don't sit next to me if you're carrying 15 bags/luggages/carry ons. If you have a lot of crap with you, fine, place it on the racks above. Don't try to shove me in the corner with all your stuff. Be a decent person and make room. And why are you carrying so much crap anyway? Ugh .. whatever the thought of dealing with this stuff already annoys me. I also don't like dealing with the mad dash of getting on the train or getting off the train first. The pushing and shoving is just so unnecessary. Just take a step back and calm down, we're all going to make it, don't worry! Am I the only one who feels this way? Again, not NYC's fault - just stupid people with no concept of courtesy. Maybe if you commute yourself, you'll understand my woes. It can be tough to deal with these sort of things on a regular basis but it's fine in the end because once I arrive in NYC I'm in a better mood. I can carry on my day with positivity! And that's what I shall do today :)
