Berliner Bears by Alex
Much like Paris and New York preceding it, Berlin is seeing a resurgent arts movement. These Bears are just one example of the creativity that is spawning in Berlin. Interesting due to the juxtaposition of their uniformity and diversity we chose this as the photo of the day.

Thanks for featuring this photo! Speaking of juxtaposition — these bears were part of an exhibit for the 2006 World Cup in Berlin, but they chose a very symbolic and historic place to showcase them. They chose Bebelplatz at Humboldt University, which was the site of the Nazi Book Burning (where there is still one of the most poignant memorials I’ve ever seen: a window to an empty bookshelf). On a place where one of Germany’s darkest moments took place, filling it in 2006 with the colors of the world during such an international event reminded me of all of the complicated layers and symbols rampant throughout Berlin. Just another reason it’s my favorite city in the world!
